13.1 Miles of "Joy" / Using Physics (kind of) / When you have something to lose

1. 13.1 Miles of “Joy”

This past weekend, I completed my first half marathon in Brooklyn, NY. I have many things to take away from visiting NYC for the first time but my biggest two realizations are 1. how much I enjoy running and 2. how much room I have to improve. Reflecting on my training, I could have put in more miles ( I didn’t run farther than 6 miles while training - not optimal). I also could have been more strategic (Using structured runs throughout the week - long runs, speed, interval, recovery, etc). With that in mind, I am excited for more races and to see my performance improve in the the near future.

2. Implementing physics (kind of) - HABITS / INERTIA

I have to give thanks to Ray Dalio and Shaan Puri for this one. Ray Dalio speaks about inertia in his book, Principles, where he says “Habit is essentially inertia, the strong tendency to keep doing what you have been doing (or not doing what you have not been doing). I have also heard Shaan Puri talk about inertia on My First Million in a similar fashion. That being said, right now I look at habits as kind of like a law of physics. In other words, my body and mind want to keep doing what they have been doing for the most part (and not doing what they have not been doing). Making sure I bring awareness to my habits (while picking the RIGHT ones that are aligned with my goals) and using inertia effectively is one of my top priorities for this year.

3. When you have something to lose……

I think habit contracts could be a great way to use pain (running away) effectively in order to take action on my goals. Right now I am on the receiving side of the money for a habit contract, but I think I need to have a habit contract myself. In this video, my friend Devin explains how and why they work in a simple and effective way. As I wrote in my last newsletter, in addition to reward, using pain can be incredibly useful (if you missed it you can read it here). That being said, please be sure to subscribe to Devin’s channel and check out the rest of his videos. They’re all great and he releases new content weekly.
